Why Bespoken Studio?
At some point you learn the meaning of your name. Mine was a bit of an eye-opener. Bridget = “strong” and Parlato =“spoken”. It’s a name I embodied before I even knew its meaning.
It’s taken many years to learn how to be the best version of that name, and, truth-be-told, it still takes awareness, introspection and observation of the world around me on a daily basis. It’s work, but it’s worth-while.
B.Spoken is also a play on the 16th century Olde English term, “bespeak”, term-of-art used in tailoring. “Bespoken” referred to the practice of ordering materials in advance as per a client’s needs and preferences.
Today, bespoke refers to a variety of goods and services specially made for a particular person, organization, or purpose.

For Mom, who Planted
the seeds of purpose
My mother kneeled next to me and held the stem of a poppy flower between her fingers. The bulbous pod seemed precariously balanced, an outsized head with a flat, daisy-shaped disc atop of it like a beret.
Having lost its soft, crepey, red petals, the pod had shifted from summer green to woody grey and the scallop-edged disc looked like a tiny awning over a colonnade of miniature arches that wrapped around the top of the pod. She shook it slightly and a soft, faint, rattle rose to only our ears in the small stillness between us and disappeared.
She held the pod above her palm and tilted it. Tap, tap, tap-her finger gently landed against the dry stem sending a cascade of perfect little black spheres cascading from the miniscule arched portals of the colonnade, as if arriving from another world. What strange magic.
I was 4, maybe 5 when my Mother shared this moment and others like it with me. She planted the seeds of curiosity, observation, and compassion, passing on a deep-reaching connection with the world around us.
