Plastic Bag Jewelry
This small-production line evolved from my work on Prayers for the Sea, a set of 100 flags created from plastic bags created for an installation about plastic pollution in our waters.
My life-long sewing experiences and familiarity with fabric had me wondering how I might further explore the fabric-like material created by fusing layers of plastic bag together.
A dichotomy is captured in this small production line. There is a beauty to this refuse. The layering of colors, weights and translucencies of the bags creates almost earthy textures and unexpected color ranges.
The pieces are at once organic and manufactured, continually surprising viewers when they discover what these pieces are made from.
Best of all, these pieces have served as a doorway to conversations about plastics, upcycling and environment.
rethink the mundane.
How can we start conversations, change perceptions, reframe the “same old, same old”?
