The Herring Run Waves
This sculpture is a 30", hand-made globe covered with cigarette butts gathered off the streets of Baltimore.
It attracts viewers who feel compelled to come closer and even touch it, intrigued by what they are looking at - until they realize the surface of the sculpture is created with littered butts.
Cigarette butts are the most littered item on the planet. 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide each year. Made from plastic, the filters do not biodegrade. After smoking, the filters are filled with harmful chemicals that then leach into soil and water when flicked on the ground as litter.
